Health Curriculum – Keeping Ourselves Safe

Kia ora te Whanau Over the next few weeks the children’s learning in Health Education will come from the Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme which is a personal safety programme.

Knowing What to Do              Ruma Kiwi

Getting Help                            Ruma Tui and Ruma Toroa

Keeping Ourselves Safe has been designed to give children the skills to cope in situations that might involve abuse. It has three overall aims:

  • To develop and strengthen children’s skills to keep themselves safe with other people
  • To support and encourage abused children to get help from caring adults
  • To make parents and teachers more aware of the need to keep children safe from abuse by adults or other children

Knowing What to Do and Getting Help will be taught by your child’s teacher in partnership with our local Police Education Officer. To be successful these programmes need your help and support. The children will have Home Book activities to work on with you. Ruma Kiwi families will also get a copy of a publication Keeping Kids Safer, which will give you information about child abuse. It is important that you participate a smuch as possible and talk to your child about what they have been learning. This will help reinforce the messages the children are getting, and help them to use their new skills with confidence. Please contact one of us if you would like any more information about the programme of if you have any concerns at all. Ka kite Paul Pesamnio Kath Bronwyn
