Successful Garage Sale and Dove Derby!

Thank you to everyone for your efforts with the garage sale on Saturday. It was a tremendous event for our school community and a great opportunity to promote our school within the wider Dunedin community.

Message from Paul Richardson

“I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank our PFA members and all who contributed to this wonderful gathering last weekend. Not only was this an excellent way to profile our wonderful school but the event also raised $3,500 worth of funds. Sincere thanks also to Pesamino and the children for providing such spectacular entertainment in the form of Waiata, Sacred Music and Kapa Haka. I might also add that the White Dove Derby was responsible for $600 of the money raised! Congratulations to everyone who helped to make this day such a success.”

Dove Derby

Thank you to all who entered our Dove Derby, Dove number 5 was the winner with a time of 13 minutes, 21 seconds!

Congratulations to:

  •  1st Equal – Ian Rutherford, Tim Hannagan – with a guess of 12 minutes, 40 seconds.
  • 3rd Place – Lynda Wall – with a guess of 12 minutes.

Thank you!

Thank you again for supporting Sacred Heart School, to those who organised the event, and to everyone who helped, donated goods or participated in any way. A huge thanks to White Doves Dunedin for kindly donating the Doves and to the Dunedin Collaboration Against Family Violence for the use of their bouncy castle.

We hope to make the garage sale an annual event, so keep this in mind when you’re having a clear out next Spring!

WELCOME

We look forward to warmly welcoming you all back after a relaxing break with lots of sunshine and great family times. Our Sacred Heart family will be together again on our opening day which is Tuesday 3rd February with three days of school and another brief holiday on Friday 6th for Waitangi Day.

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Bronwyn Bradshaw to our teaching team. Our junior children are very fortunate indeed with this appointment.

SPECIAL FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNITY EVENT

Several parents have expressed an interest in holding a monster garage sale to raise funds for the school, and we are now looking forward to the

Monster Garage Sale which will be held on Saturday 14th February beginning at 10:30am. This will also be a great chance to promote our school and come together as a community and have some fun.

There will be a number of free children’s activities so please mark your diaries and spread the word.

We would welcome donations of goods in saleable condition.  These can be dropped to the school hall between 10am to 11am on Monday 26th January, Tuesday 27th January (10am to 11am) and also Friday 30th January (10 am to 11am). After this date, please drop any contributions off to the  School office once School returns for the term.

We also welcome ideas and offers of help.  No job would be too big so please let Kay know if you would be available to help.

The attached flyer gives all of the detail, and a huge thank you must go to our Parents and Friends group for their efforts in organising such a great community event for the valley so early in the new year.

COMMUNICATION

Do check out our new calendar on our school website www.sacredheartdn.school.nz  This added improvement to our communication systems will be most welcomed I’m sure and will be updated on a regular basis.

ICT UPGRADE (SNUP)

If you have been around the school in recent days you may have noticed contractors onsite carrying our Schools Network Upgrade Project involving an upgrade of cabling and wireless facilities. This development also includes Ultra Fast Broadband and connection to the NZ Schools Networking for Learning, N4L, which is a safe information and learning internet community specifically designed for schools. We are also in the process of acquiring a number of iPad devices and this year staff will be involved in a structured professional development programme for e-learning.

We look forward to catching up with you all once again on Tuesday 3rd February.

Hour of Code a great success

The Room 4 children had a great time participating in the ‘Hour of Code‘ today – we even had a well known visitor when David Clark, our local MP dropped davidclark_hourofcode2014in to see the amazing things the kids can do.

Many children expressed a wish to keep going at home – all activities are free and links can be found at the following sites:

The level of enthusiasm was a sight to behold, and the way the children helped each other and discovered new skills was inspirational. Thanks to our volunteers Ann Cronin and Nick Adamson for helping out.

The Hour of Code is coming to Sacred Heart

We are excited to be participating in the Hour of Code with our Room 4 children timagehis year. On Friday, we will run an hour of simple exercises with the children where they can begin to understand computer science, solve puzzles and create games. Each child will be given a certificate to recognise their efforts.

The Hour of Code is an international event running in over 180 countries worldwide. It involves a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.

We encourage parents to visit the Hour of Code website and look at some of the tutorials which are on offer at http://hourofcode.com/nz
